We, the Anba Mousa El-Aswad Association in Ezbet Khairallah, Old Cairo, leverage our experience in comprehensive and sustainable development to improve our community. We aim to empower and raise legal awareness among the poor and marginalized groups through health, environmental, educational, and economic activities, engaging every member of the community while respecting customs and traditions without discrimination or bias, and in cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organizations.
The Anba Mousa El-Aswad Association received the Ann C. Michael Award in 2011 for developing a reproductive and sexual health curriculum tailored for illiterate women. The award was presented by Mrs. Barbara Bush and received by Dr. Tendyar Samir, a member of the association.

I was honored to work with the association's board and field team in the early stages through designing and conducting a series of community studies to assess needs and identify the best developmental approaches for the area. This was followed by many "train the trainer" courses and the design of health and development programs. I feel proud today as I read the association's website and see the wide expansion of services, diversity of topics, and new partnerships from different sectors. I wish the board and the team continued success in achieving the association’s vision and goals to create a better life in this area.
Since 1996, ProLiteracy has worked with Anba Mousa El-Aswad Association (ANBA) to improve health and education for adults and children who migrated from Upper Egypt in search of work. The focus on integrating a holistic approach to literacy services is one of the reasons ProLiteracy was interested in working with ANBA. Our organizations share a mutual commitment to reaching learners wherever they are and supporting them with basic literacy skills and access to information to improve their lives and communities. As a result of our collaboration, ANBA received the N-C Michael Award for integrating health and sexuality education into literacy classes. We are proud of the rich history and partnership with ANBA and look forward to continuing to serve youth and adults through literacy in the years to come!
